Square 55: Egoism (Ahamkara) – The I-Maker Whose Pride Precedes the Fall
Square fifty-five of your Leela journey brings you to Ahamkara, the "I-maker," the "ego," or the "sense of separate selfhood." It sits high on the board, within the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) — the seventh and highest chakra, the seat of spiritual awakening and cosmic consciousness. Yet Egoism is one of the board's snakes. To arrive here is not to arrive at the summit; it is to discover, painfully, that the self which claims the summit is exactly what must be surrendered.
What is Ahamkara?
In Sanskrit, aham means "I," and kara means "maker." Ahamkara is therefore the faculty that continuously manufactures the experience of being a distinct, separate individual — the running conviction that says this is me, this is mine, this is not you.
Ahamkara is not entirely a villain. The sense of a separate self is what allows you to function in the world, to take responsibility, to act, to relate. Individuality is a gift. But when the I-maker is rigidly clung to — when identity hardens into pride and the boundary between self and other becomes a wall — it becomes the single greatest obstacle to spiritual realization. So close to the crown, and yet the ego insists on standing between you and the whole.
Why Egoism is a Snake
On the Leela board, Egoism is a snake head. Landing on square 55 does not let you rest among the crown-chakra planes — it sends you down the snake from 55 to 3, into Anger (Krodha).
The logic is exact and unforgiving. Pride and anger are twins. The ego that says I am special, I am right, I deserve is the same ego that flares into rage the instant the world refuses to agree. Wounded pride is the seed of wrath. So the moment you mistake spiritual attainment for personal achievement — the moment "I have awakened" becomes another feather in the ego's cap — the very height of the board becomes the mechanism of your collapse. You tumble from the crown all the way back to Anger, one of the lowest disturbances of the game.
This is what makes Egoism a testing square, a negative state to be recognized rather than a virtue to be celebrated. The board is teaching that no altitude is safe while the I-maker still rules. The higher the ego climbs, the further it has to fall.
Recognizing the I-Maker
Reflecting on Ahamkara offers hard but liberating insight:
- Subtle pride hides in spiritual life. The ego is cunning; it will happily wear robes and call itself humble. "I am more awakened than they are" is still the I-maker at work.
- Anger reveals the ego. Watch where you become defensive, offended, or reactive — that flash of heat marks exactly where identity has hardened into a boundary worth protecting.
- Separation is constructed. The wall between "self" and "other" is built by the I-maker moment to moment. Recognizing that it is constructed is the first loosening of its grip.
Reflective Questions
Sit quietly with these, honestly:
- Where in my life does "I" and "mine" tighten into pride or defensiveness?
- The last time I felt anger, whose image of "me" was being threatened?
- Can I hold my individuality lightly — using it to act in the world, without letting it wall me off from it?
A Practice: Softening the Boundary
When you feel the I-maker asserting itself — in irritation, in the urge to be right, in the need to be seen — try this:
- Pause and name it silently: "This is ahamkara. This is the I-maker at work."
- Take three slow breaths. On each exhale, let the boundary between you and what you are resisting soften just slightly.
- Silently offer: "I hold my self lightly. I include rather than exclude."
- Notice the anger or pride lose a little of its charge as the wall thins.
You do not destroy the ego by force — force is just more ego. You loosen its grip by seeing it clearly and refusing to let it harden into wrath.
Moving Forward in the Game
Egoism reminds you that the path to the crown cannot be taken by the self that wants to arrive. If you have landed here, meet the descent to Anger without resistance: it is the board showing you, precisely, where surrender is still needed. Return, humbled, and climb again — this time holding the "I" more lightly.
Roll the dice again, and let the fall be a teacher rather than a defeat.

You are now in the seventh and highest row of the game board, associated with the Sahasrara (Crown) Chakra. This chakra governs spiritual awakening, enlightenment, and cosmic consciousness — yet even here, as Egoism proves, the ego can still cast the player down.
