Square 60: Positive Intellect (Subuddhi) – The Clear Lens of Discernment

Square sixty of your Leela journey brings you to Subuddhi, meaning "positive intellect," "good intelligence," or "right discernment." Resting within the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), the seventh and highest energy center, Subuddhi is the faculty of a mind aligned with truth and higher values — the inner clarity that guides you toward choices that benefit both yourself and everyone your life touches.

What is Subuddhi?

In Sanskrit, Subuddhi joins "su" (good, right, well) with "buddhi" (intellect, discernment, the deciding mind). It names not raw cleverness but wise intelligence — the discriminating faculty tuned to universal principles rather than to appetite or fear.

Positive intellect works like a clear lens. A clean lens does not distort what it sees; it lets reality through faithfully. In the same way, Subuddhi perceives truth from falsehood and constructive from destructive, then chooses accordingly. Landing here highlights the importance of clarity of thought and the quiet wisdom that steadies good decisions.

An Arrow of Ascent

On the board, square 60 is where the arrow from Square 22, the Plane of Dharma, comes to rest. This is a rising path — a ladder, not a snake. When a player who has grounded themselves in dharma (right living, duty, alignment with the moral order) takes the leap, they arrive at Positive Intellect. The message is beautiful in its logic: a life lived in accordance with dharma naturally sharpens the discerning mind. Right action clears the lens. Reach square 22 and live rightly, and the very structure of the game carries you up to the clarity of Subuddhi.

So arriving here is a reward, an elevation. It marks the moment your intelligence begins to serve your highest evolution rather than your smallest cravings.

The Lesson of the Clear Lens

Subuddhi teaches that discernment is a practice, not a possession. Anyone can think; the work is to think well — to weigh choices against enduring principles rather than passing preferences.

  • Perceive accurately. Positive intellect begins with seeing what is actually there, unclouded by wishful thinking or bias.
  • Choose beneficially. Wise intelligence naturally inclines toward what serves the welfare of all, not the self alone.
  • Stay clear. Clarity is maintained, like a lens wiped clean, through honesty, reflection, and alignment with truth.

Where negative intellect (its counterpart, waiting at square 61) rationalizes and distorts, positive intellect illuminates. The difference is not IQ — it is orientation. The same sharp mind can defend a comforting lie or serve the truth; Subuddhi is the mind that has chosen truth.

Reflective Questions

Sit with these before rolling again:

  • Where in my life am I letting preference masquerade as judgment? Which "decisions" are really just my appetites wearing the costume of reason?
  • When have I seen clearly and chosen well — and what made that clarity possible? Can I recreate those conditions on purpose?
  • Whose welfare does my next big choice actually serve? If only my own, is that truly discernment, or something smaller?

A Practice: Clearing the Lens

Use this short practice whenever a decision feels murky.

  • Name the choice in one plain sentence, without justification. Just the fork in the road.

  • Ask three questions in turn: Is this true? Is this constructive? Does this serve more than just me?

  • Notice which answer your body relaxes into and which one your mind is straining to defend. The strain is usually the distortion.

  • Silently affirm:

"May my intellect stay clear and my choices stay true. I discern with wisdom, and I choose for the good of all."

  • Let the clearest answer, not the most convenient one, guide your next step.

Moving Forward in the Game

Positive Intellect is a high, clear place on the board — the reward of dharma and the ally of every wise choice still to come. Yet clarity must be guarded. The very next square, Negative Intellect (Durbuddhi), is its shadow: the same mind turned to distortion. Take the gift of Subuddhi as a reminder that discernment is renewed daily, never won once and for all.

Roll the dice again, seeing clearly and choosing well.
