Square 57: Gaseous Plane (Vayu-Loka) – Expansion, Freedom, and the Web of Subtle Connection
Square fifty-seven of your Leela journey brings you to Vayu-Loka, the Gaseous Plane — the realm of expansiveness, movement, and subtle connection that transcends physical boundaries. Located high in the seventh row of the board, the Sahasrara (Crown) Chakra, this square introduces you to the air element: the principle of freedom, communication, and the invisible networks that link all living beings.
What is the Gaseous Plane?
Where the denser planes of the board fix you into solid form and flowing liquid, Vayu-Loka is the first plane to dissolve those edges. Air has no shape of its own. It fills whatever space it enters, moves without being seen, and touches everything without holding onto anything. Landing here connects you with exactly these qualities — lightness, pervasiveness, and continuous change.
This is a plane of relationship rather than substance. Just as the air surrounds and sustains all life without ever being visible, Vayu-Loka governs the subtle exchanges between beings: the passing of breath, the carrying of sound and scent, the quiet dissemination of ideas and energies from one person to another. Nothing here is your possession. Everything is in circulation.
The lesson of the Gaseous Plane is to cultivate expansive awareness — to sense the connections that exist beyond what the eyes can confirm, and to move through the world with the freedom and lightness of air itself.
The Air Element in the Crown Chakra
It is significant that this element-plane sits so near the top of the board, within the seventh chakra, the Sahasrara. The crown is the seat of spiritual connection and cosmic awareness. Air is its natural teacher: it belongs to no single place, resists being grasped, and joins the inner life of the body to the vast open space beyond it. Every breath you take is a small rehearsal of what Sahasrara points toward — a continuous exchange between the individual and the whole.
To dwell consciously in Vayu-Loka is to loosen your grip. The player who arrives here is invited to stop defending a fixed position and instead to participate, breath by breath, in the give-and-take that sustains the entire web of life.
Qualities to Contemplate at Vayu-Loka
- Freedom. Air moves where it will. Notice where in your life you have become fixed, defended, or stuck — and where you long for room to move.
- Communication. Air carries voice, scent, and signal between beings. Consider how you send and receive: what you broadcast, what you take in, and what you leave unsaid.
- Subtle connection. The bonds between people are as real as air and just as invisible. Attune to the unseen ties — of empathy, influence, and shared feeling — that link you to others.
- Lightness. To be pervasive, air holds nothing tightly. What are you carrying that could simply be set down?
Reflective Questions
- Where in my life am I holding my breath — physically, emotionally, or spiritually — and what would it feel like to exhale and let go?
- Which invisible connections sustain me daily that I rarely stop to notice or thank?
- What idea, mood, or energy am I currently spreading to the people around me, whether I intend to or not?
- Where do I confuse control with security? What might open up if I let more air into that part of my life?
A Practice: Conscious Breath and Open Space
Sit comfortably and let your attention settle on the breath, without changing it. Simply watch air enter and leave.
As you breathe in, feel the outside world becoming part of you. As you breathe out, feel yourself rejoining the space around you. There is no hard border between the two — only continuous exchange.
Now widen the awareness. Sense the air filling the whole room, then imagine it extending far beyond the walls, connecting you to every other breathing being sharing this same atmosphere. Rest in that spaciousness for several minutes.
Before you rise, silently offer one intention:
"I move with freedom. I give and receive with an open hand. I am part of the living web that breathes as one."
Carry a little of that lightness into the rest of your day.
Moving Forward in the Game
The Gaseous Plane is a normal square — no snake pulls you down here, and no arrow lifts you away. Vayu-Loka simply teaches you to travel light and to feel your connection to the whole. Having loosened your grip and expanded your awareness, you are ready to meet the next plane of energy on the board — Square 58: Plane of Radiation (Teja-Loka), where the subtle air gives way to luminous fire.
Roll the dice again, carrying the freedom and spaciousness of air with you.
